What We Learned

Spatial reasoning around natural language messaging improves understanding.

In complex workflows, having messages be related to a machine or a cell is more helpful than having messages come from a user account.

AR Devices don't need to be "always on" and are effective as fast situational awareness devices.

The Problem

Many of our clients face a frustrating challenge: a single point of contact for their critical precision machinery. This often means a person is responsible for monitoring and maintaining these complex systems, leading to a constant cycle of back-and-forth communication. This fragmented approach prevents managers from gaining a clear, real-time understanding of the machines' performance and identifying potential issues before they escalate. Instead of proactive maintenance, employees frequently find themselves diverted from their tasks to relay updates to a manager – a process that disrupts workflow and creates unnecessary delays.

This reliance on constant communication creates a chaotic environment. Workers are often pulled away from their responsibilities to find a manager, hindering productivity and making it difficult to maintain a consistent flow of production. Ultimately, this communication bottleneck is a major driver of employee turnover, as the lack of visibility and control over machine status leads to frustration and a feeling of being disconnected from the overall production process. We believe a more streamlined, transparent system is key to unlocking efficiency and fostering a more engaged workforce.

The Partnership

To boost communication efficiency, we partnered with Parker Chomerics, a chemical manufacturer, to integrate our intelligent AI-powered communication system into their extrusion floor. This collaboration also involved Snapchat, who provided AR Spectacles to enhance the system's capabilities. The primary goal of this partnership was to quantify the impact of cross-shift communication improvements – specifically, to understand how much better communication would be with the new technology.

The Solution

To enhance operational efficiency, we developed a cutting-edge software system powered by artificial intelligence. This system intelligently stores, processes, and routes audio data to the precise locations where it's needed. Integrating with augmented reality (AR) spectacles like those from Snapchat, the software overlays these audio recordings onto real-world equipment, providing workers and managers with direct visual reference points. This spatial awareness dramatically improves understanding of operational status, allowing for quicker identification of issues and more informed decision-making, ultimately boosting overall efficiency.
